An animal Vaccine known as the ‘Ancovax Vaccine’ and other Diagnostic Kits were launched by the Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shri Narendra Singh Tomar through video conferencing.
It is the country's first homegrown vaccine for animals developed by the ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines. The vaccine was developed and safe for the species like dogs, lions, leopards, mice and rabbits.
The immunity induced by the vaccine neutralizes both Delta and Omicron Variants of SARS-CoV-2 as it contains inactivated SARS-CoV-2 (Delta) antigen with Alhydrogel as an adjuvant.
The Diagnostic Kit named 'CAN-CoV-2 ELISA kit' is a sensitive and specific nucleocapsid protein-based indirect ELISA kit. The purpose of the kit is to detect the antibody against COVID in canines. The Surra ELISA Kit is a suitable Diagnostic Assay for Trypanosoma evansi infection in multiple animal species. The Surra is one of the most important haemoprotozoan diseases of the different livestock species caused by Trypanosoma evansi.
The kit is made in India and a patent has been filed for the same. No other comparable kits for the detection of antibodies in canines are available on the market.
The vaccine was developed based on a nine-year-old lioness has died after testing positive for COVID-19 at a zoo in Chennai in 2021. It was believed to be the first reported death of an animal in the country due to the virus.
