World Bicycle Day

IMPORTANT DAYS, BOOKS & AUTHORS

World Bicycle Day is being observed on 3rd June by the United Nations to spread awareness of the tremendous health benefits due to cycling for all age groups. Along with cycling, and other physical activities walking, and doing sports has significant benefits for health.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared June 3 as the International Bicycle Day in April 2018 after passing a resolution regarding cycling. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes ‘the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport’.

The logo of World Bicycle Day was designed by Isaac Feld, with an accompanying animation created by Professor John E. Swanson, showing bicyclists riding on various types of bicycles around the world.

The bicycle is recognized as a symbol of human progress and advancement and is now being associated with promoting a healthy lifestyle for those with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The COVID-19 pandemic has also led many cities to rethink their transport systems. It is a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

An initiative ‘India Cycles4Change Challenge’ was launched in June 2020 to inspire and support the cities to implement cycling-friendly initiatives during the time of COVID-19.
