New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka 'Mitali Express' Flagged off by Railway Ministers Of India and Bangladesh

NATIONAL

The India-Bangladesh ‘Mitali Express train’ was virtually flagged off by the Union Railway Minister and his Bangladeshi counterpart from New Delhi.

The train departed from New Jalpaiguri in India and would arrive at the Dhaka Cantonment station covering a distance of 595-km in a span of 11 hours. The frequency of the train will be increased in the future citing more people-to-people connections. This is the first India-Bangladesh train service from New Jalpaiguri station (NJP) in West Bengal.

In March 2021, the express train was virtually inaugurated by the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh. The inauguration of the new train is considered another milestone in strengthening the bilateral trade relationship and socio-economic activities between the two neighbouring countries.

The Border Security Force (BSF) will take the train at Haldibari station and hand it over to Bangladesh at the Zero line

The train connects Bangladesh with North Bengal and the northeastern region of India. The train also provides an additional facility for Bangladeshi citizens to visit Nepal via India by rail. Currently, the train will run with four air-conditioned cabin coaches, and four air-conditioned chair cars and will be hauled by a diesel locomotive.

The other trains - Maitree and Bandhan express - run connecting Kolkata with Dhaka and Khulna of Bangladesh.
