The 26th death anniversary of Mr.Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was observed on 1st June of this year. Neelam Sanjiva Reddy was the sixth President of India from 1977 to 1982.
He died at the age of 83 due to pneumonia in 1996. He was succeeded by Mr.Giani Zail Singh as Indian president.
Mr.Reddy worked with three governments i.e. during the tenure of the Prime Ministers Morarji Desai, Charan Singh and Indira Gandhi during his tenure.
He became the first chief minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1956 to 1960 and also from 1962 to 1964 and has the modernisation of the state accredited to his name. He served as the president of the Indian National Congress for three years (1960 to 1962).
Reddy was born in 1913 in Andhra Pradesh and his life was changed by Mahatama Gandhi during his first visit to the area in 1929. Inspired by the Gandhian ideology and gave up the use of all western products and started wearing khadi.
He authored a book titled ‘without fear or favour: reminiscences and reflections of a president’ which briefed his experience as the President of the country. The book was published in 1989.
The Postal Department of India released a commemorative stamp and special cover in honour of Reddy on the occasion of his birth centenary in 2013.
