People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) was Released by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation

NATIONAL

The People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR) was released by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. With this, Kolkata is the first metro city in the country to prepare a detailed register of biodiversity. This is the first-of-its-kind report of any Indian metro.

PBR is a document prepared by the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) with details about the floral and faunal varieties in the city as well as its land use and human activities.

Chandigarh and Indore are other important cities that have prepared the document.

The Forest Survey of India’s recent report had flagged the West Bengal Capital for the least greenery among all metro cities.

According to the National Forest Report, Kolkata had the least greenery among all metros. To improve the city’s greenery quotient and to protect water bodies and their biodiversity, a pocket of urban forestry will be set up by the city corporation.

The PBR’s data was based on the data sourced from 144 wards in the city. It documented 138 species of trees, 26 types of Chinese vegetables, 33 species of medicinal plants and about 100 other plant species. It also documented around 290 animal species, including about 70 species of butterflies, 47 varieties of fish, 84 varieties of birds and 22 varieties of mammals.
