World No Tobacco Day is Celebrated on 31st May

IMPORTANT DAYS, BOOKS & AUTHORS

World No Tobacco Day is being celebrated on 31st May every year to create awareness about the ill effects of tobacco, the disease it can cause and the preventable measure. Smoking harms almost every part of your body and increases your risk of many diseases.

The day has been celebrated by the member states of the World Health Organisation since 1987.

For this year, the theme selected is “Protect The Environment”.

On this day, global attention is drawn upon the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of tobacco manufacturers and the steps taken by the WHO to combat the tobacco epidemic.

Tobacco is the common name of several plants in the genus Nicotiana of the family Solanaceae, and the general term for any product prepared from the cured leaves of these plants.

Consuming tobacco kills over 80 lakh people across the world every year. This could be one of the factors that are believed to adversely impact the efforts to achieve the UN–adopted sustainable development agenda by 2030. One of the goal of SDG is to reduce tobacco-related deaths by one-third by 2030.

To decline the tobacco consumption, India runs a National Tobacco Control Programme to educate people about the health implications of tobacco consumption.

Some of the health effects by consuming tobacco products are Cancer, Breathing problems, Heart disease, stroke, blood circulation problems, Diabetes, etc.
