The WAFs ‘Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021’ was recently released by the World Economic Forum. This index compares 117 countries across the world based on the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness evolution, having been published biennially for the last 15 years.
In this index, India has been ranked 54th place with a score of 4.2. But the country still topped within the South Asia region. In the 2019 edition, India secured 46th place.
The index was topped by Japan with a score of 5.2. Japan was followed by the United States of America, Spain, France, and Germany.
The Index assesses the countries, based on 5 sub-indexes, 17 pillars, and 112 individual indicators, distributed among the different pillars. Following are the five Sub indexes - Enabling Environment, Travel and Tourism Policy and Enabling Conditions, Infrastructure, Travel, and Tourism Demand Drivers, and Travel and Tourism Sustainability.
As per the index, even though the world is slowly recovering from the effects of the pandemic, the countries must invest in this sector to build a resilient and strong environment for tourism and travel.
