25-year-old Boxer Nikhat Zareen of India won the title of the Women's World Boxing Championship-2022 after defeating Jitpong Jutamas of Thailand in the final match of the tournament.
The Women's World Boxing Championship-2022 was held in Istanbul, Turkey. Medal winners were awarded prize money - gold medallists earn $100,000, silver medallists $50,000, and bronze medallists $25,000.
Zareen won the bronze medal in the 2019 Asian Championship. She hails from Nizamabad (Telangana).
Zareen won the gold medal in the 52kg category and she become the fifth Indian boxer to win the yellow metal in the tournament. The other Indian players were Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, and Lekha KC.
It was also India's first gold medal since boxing great Mary Kom won it in the 48-kg category in 2018. Mary Kom won the championship six times - 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018.
Among the 12-member Indian contingent, Manisha Moun (57kg category) and debutant Parveen Hooda (63kg category) won bronze medals.
Overall, in the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships, India now has won 39 medals in total (10 golds, 8 silvers, and 21 bronze). India recorded its best performance in the 2006 event when the country snared eight medals (4 golds, 1 silver, and 3 bronze).
