PERSON AND PLACES
Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Mr.Anil Baijal submitted his resignation to the President of India citing personal reasons and his advanced age - he is 76-years-old.
He was appointed as the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi in December 2016. He was in the position for 5 years and 5 months period. He is a 1969-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Union Territory cadre.
Earlier, he served as the vice-chairperson of the Delhi Development Authority. He also served as the Union Home Secretary during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government in 2004. In 2006, he retired as Union Urban Development Secretary. He also headed the important public sector companies such as Prasar Bharti and Indian Airlines.
With CM Arvind Kejriwal’s government, he was at loggerheads over the implementation of the doorstep delivery of services and ration schemes. In 2021, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991 was passed by the Parliament, which effectively made the L-G the overall head of the Delhi government, meaning all files would have to be passed through him. After the law passed, Mr.Kejriwal alleged that the Lt.Governor would try to take control of the government following the amendment being passed.
