A military aid package is being prepared by the United States of America for India to deepen the security ties between the two countries. The details of the package are undisclosed.
The other objective of this deal is to reduce India’s dependence on Russia for military weapons. India is the world’s largest buyer of Russian weapons. As per the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s (SIPRI) data, over the past decade, India has bought more than $25 billion worth of military equipment from Russia. This is to protect the country against neighbors China and Pakistan.
According to the SIPRI’s data, India bought only about $4 billion worth of military equipment from the US.
The package under consideration would include foreign military financing of as much as $500 million dollars. After receiving this package, India would be one of the largest recipients of such military aid behind Israel and Egypt.
With the vision of being a reliable partner for India, this effort is part of a much larger initiative by President Joe Biden’s administration to court India as a long-term security partner, despite its reluctance to criticize Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
The major challenge remains in supplying India’s major platforms like fighter jets, naval ships, and battle tanks.
Recently, the countries the USA, Europe, Australia, and Japan have imposed economic sanctions on Russia but India has held off and instead continued imports of discounted Russian oil.
