Rajiv Kumar, A Retired IAS Officer is Appointed as Next Chief Election Commissioner of ECI

As per the notification issued by the Law Ministry, Mr.Rajiv Kumar, a retired IAS officer is appointed as the next Chief Election Commissioner of the Election Commission of India (ECI). 

He will take charge from the 15th of May 2022. He will be the 25th Chief Election Commissioner of India.

He will replace Mr.Sushil Chandra whose term would end on 14th May 2022. He has been an Election Commissioner of the ECI since September 1, 2020.

The Chief Election Commissioner will be appointed by the President of India in pursuance of clause (2) of Article 324 of the Indian Constitution.

Mr.Kumar was born on February 19, 1960. He was a 1984-batch Bihar/Jharkhand cadre IAS officer who was superannuated in February 2020.

He then took charge as Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) in April 2020 and joined the ECI as an Election Commissioner on September 1, 2020.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body that was established in 1950 to conduct and regulate central and state elections in the country. The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, State Legislative Councils, and the offices of the President and Vice President of the country.
