At the recently held meeting of the Executive Board and General Assembly, India has been unanimously elected as the new Chair of the Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) for the period from 2022 to 2024. The meeting was held in Manila, Philippines.
Previously, India also served on the Executive Board of the AAEA as the Vice-Chair during 2011-13 and chaired during 2014-16. The current chair of AAEA is Commission on Elections, Manila.
From India, a 3-member delegation headed by the Shri Nitesh Vyas, Deputy Election Commissioner attended the meeting and presented the work plan on the topic ‘Gender Issues in Elections’ for the period 2022-23 to the Executive Board. And also, the team presented for also futuristic activities for the term 2023-24.
Officials from many AAEA member countries have been regularly attending International Training Programmes conducted by India International Institute for Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) from time to time. During 2021-22, Bangladesh Election Commission’s 50 officials were trained in the programme.
Delegates from AAEA have also been regularly participating in the International Election Visitors Programme organised by the Election Commission of India.
The Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) was established in 1998. The new member of the Executive Board now includes Russia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Taiwan and the Philippines. Currently, 20 Asian Election Management Body (EMB) are members of AAEA.
