South Korea Becomes 1st Asian Country to Join NATO's Cyber Defense Group

INTERNATIONAL

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea became the first country in Asia to join North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)’s Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence (CCDCOE) due to the rising threats from China and North Korea. NIS is South Korea’s top spy agency.

South Korea joined NATO’s group as the country has always been a frequent target of North Korean cyberattacks. In 2021, North Korea hacked into the Korean Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).

China has allegedly provided North Korean cyber units with training, technology and cover for their cyber espionage and financial theft operations.

With this, the NIS can learn more about threat response methods and ways to defend critical infrastructure, with the overarching goal of having world-class capabilities to respond to those threats. The country tries to join CCDCOE in 2019. With the inclusion of South Korea, the total official members of NATO’s CCDCOE is 32 countries.

CCDCOE was a cyber defense hub founded in Estonia, in 2008 and is focused on cyber-security research, training, and exercises. It serves as a knowledge hub, research institution, and training facility focused on interdisciplinary applied research, consulting, and exercises in cybersecurity.
