An annual event, World Athletics Day 2022 was celebrated on the 7th of May, every year to raise awareness about Athletics and to encourage the youth to take up sports. The day is being observed by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
The focus of the day for the year 2022 is to boost the participation of children and students in various sports events.
The day was first introduced in 1996 by the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF). To celebrate the day, IAAF launches various sports events for schools and colleges every year, to increase the participation of the students.
The theme for the year 2022 is not yet announced.
On this World Athletics Day, the Indian nation dedicates the day to the Golden boy of India, Neeraj Chopra, who made the entire nation proud by winning a gold medal in the Olympics 2020. He won the gold medal by throwing 87.58 meters in the Javelin throw.
IAAF was founded in Sweden on 17 July 1912, by 17 national athletic federations as the international governing body for the field of athletics. The IAAF is the ratifying body for all official world records in track-and-field events. It is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
