Shooter Dhanush Srikanth has won gold in the men’s 10m air rifle event at the 24th Deaflympics which is being held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil. He is the first Indian shooter to win a gold medal at the Deaflympics.
This is the first time for the Games to be held in the Southern Hemisphere since the 2005 Summer Deaflympics, held in Melbourne. Originally scheduled to take place in December 2021, the game was postponed to May 2022 due to the COVID pandemic.
In the eight-man final match, he shot a world-record score of 247.5 for the hearing-impaired category. In the same category, the silver medal was won by Kim Woo Rim (Korea) and the bronze medal was won by Dhanush’s teammate Shourya Saini, who shot 224.3. With a score of 247.5, he broke the record of the German shooter Colin Muller who was set a record in 2019 with a score of 243.2.
He trains at Gagan Narang’s Gun for Glory Academy in Hyderabad. He also became the first shooter with a hearing impairment to get selected for the Indian national team in 2019.
The Indian badminton team also won gold beating Japan 3-1 in the final match of the event.
The points table was topped by Ukraine with 38 medals (19 gold, 6 silver, and 13 bronze medals). India ranked eighth with 3 medals (2 gold and 1 bronze medal).
