Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated its 62nd Raising Day on May 7th of this year. BRO is a leader in the arena of infrastructural development in the border areas of the country. Currently, it is a part of the Indian Armed Forces.
The organization was founded on 7th May 1960 as a leading road construction agency that functions under the Ministry of Defence. The organization’s motto is Shramena Sarvam Sadhyam (everything is achievable through hard work.
Its primary goal is to secure India’s borders and develop infrastructure in remote areas of India’s north and north-eastern states for defense forces. Is instrumental in significantly upgrading and building new India-China Border Roads (ICBRs)
In the Union budget 2022-23, the Union Government allotted about Rs 3,500 crores for developing the road infrastructure in the border areas. The works executed by the organization have ensured the territorial integrity and the socio-economic upliftment of the most inaccessible regions of the country as well as India’s neighborhood countries - Afghanistan, Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan and Sri Lanka.
The organization also maintains over 53,000-km roads along Northern and Western frontiers mainly to meet the strategic requirements of the Indian Army.
A special event was organized at Sangram in memory of Lt Col Alok Mathur and to honor him for laying down his life to bullets of miscreants at the site on 7th October 2003. Sangram is a Town in Arunachal Pradesh state.
BRO set a Guinness World Record in November 2021 for the "highest altitude road" at Umling La.
