NATIONAL

The first ethanol plant in the country was inaugurated in the Purnea district of Bihar by the Chief Minister of state. The plant would be set up at Rs.105-crore by a private investor ‘Eastern India Biofuels Private Limited’ with the latest technology.

The ethanol production from this plant would help in the reduction of the cost of petrol and generate fresh employment opportunities in the state.

It is the first one developed since the Union government approved the Bihar government’s ethanol production and promotion policy -2021. The state came up with an ethanol production promotion policy in the first half of 2021.

As per this policy, the state government of Bihar tends to establish 17 ethanol production plants to produce 35 crore liters of fuel every year by using sugarcane, molasses, maize, and broken rice. Besides Purnia, the Ethanol plants are being set up in Muzaffarpur, Bhojpur, Nalanda, Buxar, Madhubani, and Begusarai, Gopalganj, East Champaran, Bhagalpur.

The plant would be built on 15 acres which will be developed with the latest technology using zero waste discharge. In fact, the Bihar government had been trying to establish an ethanol plant since 2007.

The plant is known as the country’s first greenfield grain-based ethanol plant, as it would buy 130 tonnes of rice husk and 150 tonnes of maize or rice from farmers every day for the production of ethanol. The manufactured ethanol will be supplied to oil marketing companies for blending into petrol and diesel.

Ethanol is an organic chemical compound. It is a renewable fuel made from corn and other plant materials. The Union government fixed a target of selling 20% ethanol-blended fuel across the country by five years to 2025.
