On the first day of the IWF Junior World Championships 2022, 18-year-old Harshada Sharad Garud became India's first weightlifter to win a gold medal in the tournament. The championship is being held in Heraklion, Greece.
She finish on top of the podium after lifting 153-kg in the 45-kg weight category, which includes 70kg in Snatch and 83 kg in Clean and Jerk to.
The 70kg effort in snatch earned Harshada a top-of-the-podium finish while she was second-best in the clean and jerk section, behind Turkey's Bektas Cansu (85kg), who took the home the silver medal with an overall effort of 150kg (65kg+85 kg).
In the game, Bektas Cansu of Turkey bagged the silver medal while Teodora-Luminita Hincu of Moldova won the bronze medal.
Harshada had already won the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games under-17 girls' title and she bagged eight medals including seven golds at last year's Tokyo Olympics.
The other Indian in the field, Anjali Patel finished fifth overall in this tournament with a total effort of 148kg (67kg+81kg).
In the 2013 and 2018 editions of the game, Mirabai Chanu and Jhilli Dalabehera of India won the bronze medals respectively. Achinta Sheuli of India won a silver medal in the last year's tournament.
Since 1975, the World Juniors Weightlifting Championships is organised by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
