Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of seven new cancer hospitals in Dibrugarh of Assam. The 7 centers will be constructed with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore by the Government of Assam in association with Tata Trusts. The state was registered with 11,195 cancer patients during 2018-19.
The Chief Minister of Assam held a meeting at Manohari Tea Retreat of Dibrugarh, to discuss the plans for the inauguration of the Dibrugarh Cancer Center. Before the inauguration of the cancer center, the Prime Minister will visit Diphu to attend his first party meeting in the state.
Cancer is a large group of diseases that can start in almost any organ or tissue of the body when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably. Cancer is medically known as neoplasm and malignant tumor.
During the period 2010-2019, the Cancer cases and cancer deaths in India increased at an average annual rate of 1.1-2% and 0.1-1% respectively. Among the 1,392,179 cancer-affected people in India, the leading types of cancer were breast, lung, mouth, cervix, uteri and tongue.
In the year 2019, cancer was the second leading cause of death globally after cardiovascular diseases. This year, cancer deaths accounted for an estimated 9.6 million deaths or one in six deaths.
