HAL and Bharat Electronics to Make Indigenous Search and Track System

DEFENCE, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

For the production of the Long-Range Dual-Band Infra-Red Search and Track System (IRST), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) as part of the 'Make in India' initiative. This IRST system was developed as an alternative to the existing system which will be used for Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighter jets.

An infrared search and track (IRST) system is a method for detecting and tracking objects which give off infrared radiation such as jet aircraft and helicopters.

The deal was signed under the MAKE-II procedure of Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020, as part of the 'Make in India' initiative.

The newly proposed IRST system is a high-end strategic technology product in the field of defence avionics which has the features of a Television Day Camera, Infrared & LASER sensors in a single window for air-to-air and air-to-ground target tracking and localization. It can enhance the Indian Air Force's air superiority.

This initiative also opens a future path in the field of indigenous defence manufacturing for the development of high-end strategic technology products of IRST for various platforms in a globally competitive environment.
