Nicaragua closed the offices of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the capital Managua as it was decided to withdraw from the bloc. Its local headquarters has been closed. The reason for withdrawal from the organization is, that it acts as an instrument of US imperialism.
The country will immediately split from the OAS and the rescinding of the credentials of its representatives in Washington. The withdrawal was set to take place over two years.
The country will no longer as part of the so-called Permanent Council, so-called commissions, so-called meetings, so-called Summit of the Americas. In the meantime, Nicaragua could complete any pending commitments it might have with the organization. Till then, it is a full member and must comply with all its commitments.
In the year 2020, the neighboring country Venezuela officially withdrew from OAS.
The Organization of American States (OAS) was founded on 30 April 1948 for the purposes of solidarity and cooperation among its member states within the Americas. With 35 members, the organization has focused on election monitoring.
