In India, the National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated on 24th April every year by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj to commemorate the day on which the 73rd Constitutional Amendment was passed in 1992 and to mark the inception of decentralized power. The 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act came into effect on April 24, 1993.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24 April in the year 2010. The 12th edition of the National Panchayati Raj Day-2021 was a unique occasion to recognize the Panchayats for their exemplary work towards building an Aatma Nirbhar Bharat.

On this day, the best performing Panchayats/States/UTs across the country have been awarded by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj in recognition of their good work. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj was formed in May 2004 to deal with all matters relating to Panchayati Raj and Panchayati Raj institutions.

The decentralized three-layered Panchayati Raj system was recommended by the Balwant Rai Mehta committee which was formed in 1957. The committee was formed to focus on the evolution of Panchayati Raj in the country. The three-layered Panchayati Raj system – Gram Panchayat at the Village level, Panchayat Samiti at the Block level and Zila Parishad at the District level. At all three tiers, more than 2.6 lakh Panchayats were there.
