The state Cabinet of Tripura approved “Tripura Journalist Health Insurance Scheme-2022”, a health insurance cover for accredited journalists in association with print, web, and electronic media organizations.
The approved insurance scheme will cover medical expenses up to Rs 3 lakh. The state government will contribute 80% of the annual premium while the rest of the amount needs to be contributed by the beneficiary himself. For example, if the total premium is Rs.6,000, the state government will pay Rs.4,800 and the remaining Rs.1200 will have to be borne by the journalist.
The state government invited tenders from different insurance companies and it is expected that the entire process would be completed in the next two months.
In the first phase of the scheme, the state government set a target to cover at least 1,000 journalists. The state has 177 accredited journalists and applications are invited from others. After a severe scrutinization, all the eligible journalists will be given the accreditation cards within a short period.
