Shivamogga Airport to be Named After Former CM of Karnataka

On the demand of several political leaders, the state cabinet of Karnataka approved the naming of Shivamogga airport with the former Chief Minister of Karnataka Mr.B S Yediyurappa, as he is the person who finally started the construction of this airport in 2020, as the draft plan was pending since 2006.  The proposal for naming the airport after the name of BS Yediyurappa would be sent to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry.

The airport is under construction works and will be inaugurated by December 2022. The state government considers that the airport would give a big boost to education, health services, industrialization, and development of Shivamogga – the city in Karnataka.

This under-construction airport will have the longest runway of 3299m after the Bengaluru airport. It has the facilities like ATC equipment and night landing facilities. The airport is being constructed at international standards and projects have been taken up under the UDAN programme.

BS Yediyurappa’s name was finalized for naming the airport among the other list of names - Keladi Shivappa Nayaka, Keladi Chennamma, and Mayuravarma, 12th-century social reformer Akka Mahadevi, father of Indian Constitution Dr. B R Ambedkar and national poet Kuvempu.
