Karnataka to Host Khelo India University Games

Few Olympians will be participating in the Khelo India University Games (KIUG)-2021 which is to be held in Bengaluru with Jain Deemed-to-be University as the host University for the Games to be inaugurated on the 24th of April. Some Olympians were Tokyo Olympians Srihari Nataraj (Swimming), Manu Bhaker (Shooting) and Dutee Chand (Athletics).

The Khelo India University games to be held in Bengaluru was organized to provide a national level launchpad for university students to showcase their talent and catch the eyeballs of the national team selectors for various sports and to prepare the players for international level competitions.

In this game, two new disciplines were added for the first time - Yogasana and

Mallakhamb. These events were added to preserve and promote the century-old

sporting disciplines of the country.  

The sporting event will be broadcast live on multiple channels of Doordarshan, PIB digital channels and All India Radio. The games will also be available live on the Sony LIV OTT platform for eight hours daily. A mobile application was launched to provide all the information related to the

University games.

Along with the Olympians, about 3800 athletes from 189 Universities across the country were participating across various 20 disciplines for 275 Gold Medals.  

   Important points for the exam:

  • In the second edition of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) which is to be held in Bengaluru from April 24th, few Olympians will also participate.
  • Jain Deemed-to-be University as the host University for the Games and this is the first Khelo India Green Games.
  • Two new disciplines were added for the first time - Yogasana and Mallakhamb - with a purpose to preserve the sporting disciplines.

   Facts to know:

  • The first edition of Khelo India games was started in 2018 in Delhi.
  • The first edition of the Khelo India University Games was started in Cuttack, Odisha in 2020.
