Japan Researchers Develop Electric Chopsticks That Enhance Salty Taste To Promote Better Health

DEFENCE, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

The computerised or electric chopsticks have developed by the Japanese researchers and co-developed by Tokyo’s Meiji University professor Homei Miyashita and beverage maker Kirin Holdings Co. which enhance tastes using electrical stimulation and a mini-computer worn on a wristband.

This Japanese invented Electric Chopsticks uses a weak electrical current to transmit sodium ions from food, through the chopsticks, to the mouth where they create a sense of saltiness. The chopsticks use “very weak electricity” – not enough to affect the human body.

The salty taste enhances 1.5 times. The taste-enhancing chopsticks may have particular traditional relevance in Japan. The prototype would be refined and hoped to make the chopsticks available to consumers next year.

The average Japanese adult consumes about 10 grams of salt per day, double the amount recommended by the World Health Organisation. Excess sodium intake is related to increased incidence of high blood pressure, strokes and other ailments. The health ministry has proposed reducing daily salt intake to a maximum of 7.5 grams for men and 6.5 grams for women.
