Indian-American Navy Veteran Shanti Sethi Appointed as Defence Advisor to Kamala Harris

Indian-American Navy veteran Shanti Sethi has joined US Vice President Kamala Harris's office as her executive secretary and defence advisor. She is the first Indian-American joined Vice President’s office to serve on the National Security Advisor documentation across the Office of the Vice President.

She was joined the US-Navy in 1993 and commanded the guided-missile destroyer, USS Decatur from 2010-12. While heading the ship, she had taken it on a visit to Chennai in 2011. She was also the first female commander of a US naval vessel to visit India. She has also been the Commanding Officer of the Sixth Fleet’s Task Force 64.

An Indian-American Ms.Kamala Harris became the first-ever woman Vice President of the United States in 2021. She was also the first Black and first South Asian American Vice President.

Sethi was born in Reno, Nevada. Her mom was born in Canada and became a naturalised US citizen at the age of 12, while her father immigrated to the US from India in the early 1960s
