Egypt Approved for Wheat Import

BANKING AND ECONOMY

  • Due to ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the one-third global wheat production faced a sharp dip.
  • Egypt, one of the top importers of wheat from Russia and Ukraine, has approved to import wheat from India, after a rigorous process of field visits and checks in quarantine facilities in India.
  • Earlier, Egypt imported about only 1 million tonne of wheat from India. Now, about India aims to export 10-11 million tonnes of wheat in FY23.
  • The wheat will be exported to Egypt from the Indian states - Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab.
  • India is making efforts to boost wheat exports to other countries including Yemen, Afghanistan and Indonesia.

  • Wheat is the second most important staple food, mainly a rabi season crop in India.
  • Required rainfall for the wheat cultivation: 75-100 cm.
  • Black soil is suitable for wheat cultivation.
