The Longest Non-Stop Helicopter in India

  • Boeing-made CH-47 Chinook helicopter of the Indian Air Force undertook the longest non-stop helicopter sortie in India.
  • The helicopter had a flight from Chandigarh to Jorhat (Assam) covering a distance of 1910 km in 7.5 hours.
  • India signed a deal with USA in 2015 for the purchase of 15 Chinooks choppers along with 22 Apache attack helicopters at a cost of around $3 billion.
  • The Chinook is a multi-role, vertical-lift platform, which is used for transporting troops, artillery, equipment and fuel.
  • It is also used for humanitarian and disaster relief operations and in missions such as transportation of relief supplies and mass evacuation of refugees.
