DEFENCE, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

  • NASA spotted the farthest star ever seen and named ‘Earendel’ which is 12.9 billion light-years away from the planet Earth.
  • Previously, the record was with the star ‘Icarus’ which is 9 billion light-years away from the Earth. It was discovered in 2018.
  • The name ‘Earendel’ which means ‘morning star’ is composed of mainly lighter elements - hydrogen and helium.
  • It was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope’s RELICS (Reionization Lensing Cluster Survey) program and through ‘gravitational lensing’ method.
  • The newly discovered star was 50 times bigger and a million times brighter than our Sun.
