BIMSTEC Summit 2022 was hosted by Sri Lanka in virtual format and was attended by the Prime Minister of India. This is a 5th edition summit of BIMSTEC.
Sri Lanka is the Chairman of the BIMSTEC since September 2018.
The main subject to discuss in the summit - Covid pandemic-related challenges, facing uncertainties within the international system and urgency regarding technical and economic cooperation of the group.
Also the leaders will discuss the establishment of basic institutional structures and mechanisms of the group.
India announced 1 million dollars to increase the operational budget of the Secretariat of BIMSTEC.
Previous summit was hosted by Nepal in its capital (Kathmandu) in 2018. India hosted the summit in 2008.
