Russia to Terminate Peace Treaty with Japan

  • Russia decided to terminate peace treaty talks with Japan. Russia and Japan have never signed a peace treaty to formally end World War II.
  • Russia decided this, after Japan introduced a series of sanctions on Russian financial institutions and chip exports.
  • After the treaty terminated, the visa-free trips by Japanese citizens to disputed four islands would cease. These islands were in dispute between Russia and Japan.
  • Earlier, Japan restricted about 300 products for export to Russia, froze the assets of several banks and restricted the entry of Russian leaders.
