First Woman MP of Nagaland


  • Ms. S Phangnon Konyak of BJP is the first Naga woman to become the Member of Parliament of Rajya Sabha from the state of Nagaland.
  • She is the second woman to be a Member of Parliament from Nagaland and she was the first BJP member from Nagaland to be sent to Parliament.
  • The first woman was Rano M Shaiza, who became a Lok Sabha member in the 1977 general elections in 45 years.
  • The tenure of KG Kenye of NPF, the incumbent Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland, will end on 2nd April of this year.
  • A Member of Parliament (MP) is the representative of the Indian people who live in their electoral district, in both houses of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

  • The Minimum age to be a MP: 25 years (Lok Sabha) and 30 years (Rajya Sabha).
  • Strength of Lok Sabha: 543 members - 2 nominated members from Anglo-Indian community.
  • Strength of Rajya Sabha: 250 members - 12 nominated members.
