National Aids Programme Extended

NATIONAL

  • The centrally-funded ‘fifth phase of the National AIDS and STD Control Programme’ was extended till 31st March, 2026 to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.3.
  • It was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The fund allocated for this successful programme is Rs 15,471.94 crore.
  • The Phase-IV of the programme was concluded on March 31, 2021.
  • The annual HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths have declined by 48% and 82% respectively in India.

  • SDG 3.3: Ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.
  • AIDS: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
  • The first case of HIV in India was detected in 1986.
