India Embarks on the World's Largest Film Restoration Project Under National Film Heritage Mission

Information and Broadcasting Minister, Anurag Thakur said that an amount of Rs 363 crore has been allotted for the world’s largest film restoration project under the National Film Heritage Mission. Out of the total outlay of Rs 597 crore earmarked for this mission, Rs.363 crores is exclusively put for the restoration project which is set to commence at the National Film Archive of India (NFAI).

Under the National Film Heritage Mission, approximately 2,200 films will undergo restoration. Apart from this, 5,900 short films, documentaries and features are underway in the restoring processes. This exercise carried out by NFAI proved to be one of the world’s biggest restoration, conservation, preservation and digitization processes.

The process involves frame-to-frame digital and semi-automated manual picture and sound restoration from the best surviving source material.  The damages including scratches, dirt and abrasions in every frame of the picture negative will be cleaned during the restoration process.
