A ‘Social Awareness and Action to Neutralize Pneumonia Successfully’ (SAANS), a social awareness campaign was launched in Karnataka by the state’s Health and Medical Education Minister Mr.Keshava Reddy Sudhakar.
As per SRS 2018, Karnataka’s under-five mortality due to pneumonia is at 28 per 1000 live births.
The campaign was launched to ensure early detection and greater awareness of pneumonia in children under the age of five. The campaign was launched to achieve the state’s goal to reduce the under-five mortality to 23 per 1,000 lives by 2025 and also to achieve the National Health Policy goals i.e. pneumonia mortality needs to be reduced to less than 3 per 1,000 live births.
Childhood pneumonia continues to pose a significant health threat to the children under-five years of age across the country contributing to 15% of under-five deaths.
Pneumonia is a lung infection that is caused due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infection. If it is detected and diagnosed on time, it is a preventable disease.
Apart from strengthening facility-level management for cases of severe pneumonia, setting-up skill stations and skill-based training of healthcare providers is also going on. All healthcare providers have been asked to take up active screening of under-five children for early identification and management of pneumonia.
