Shaheed Diwas

NATIONAL

  • The Punjab state government declared a state holiday on Shaheed Diwas or Martyrs' Day to pay tribute to the freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
  • The Shaheed Diwas is celebrated on 23rd March every year which marks the sacrifice of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru.
  • These freedom fighters were hanged to death by the British government in 1931.
  • The state assembly passed a resolution to install statues of Bhagat Singh, Dr BR Ambedkar and Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the first Sikh ruler in the Vidhan Sabha.

Facts to know:

 

  • The slogan "Inquilab Zindabad" was given by Bhagat Singh.
  • Bhagat Singh was also popularly known as ‘Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh’.
  • Bhagat Singh was born in 1907 and died in 1931.
