IBPS PO Selection Process

IBPS PO selection process comprises three phases. A candidate must qualify each to proceed to the next phase.

IBPS Preliminary Exam 

  • It is an Computer Based examination
  • IBPS shortlists candidates in each category (General/ SC/ST/PWBD) for the Main Examination

IBPS Mains Exam

  • It is an Computer Based examination
  • The candidates qualifying the preliminary examination appear for this examination
  • The candidates must qualify the sectional and an overall cutoff in the main exam to be eligible for the interview
  • There is different cut-off list for qualifying the Main examination for each category (General/ SC/ST/PWBD)

Interview Process

  • The interview will be conducted by the Participating Organisation and coordinated by the Nodal Bank in each State/UT with the help of IBPS

Candidates must clear the cutoff in all three sections to qualify for IBPS PO Main Exam.  

IBPS does not fix the cut-off marks. Instead, it decides depending on the question paper. The adequate number of candidates in each category are shortlisted for the Mains examination depending upon requirements.

Prelims exam is only qualifying, which means marks got in the Prelims exam will not be added anywhere else.

The main Exam also consists of a descriptive paper having 2 questions on Letter and Essay writing. IBPS will examine the descriptive paper only when the candidate will score minimum marks in the objective paper. 


IBPS PO Eligibility Criteria

IBPS PO eligibility criteria is based on four parameters:

  • Education Qualification – Bachelor’s degree (any stream) from a recognized university
  • Age Limit – 20 to 30 years
  • Nationality – Citizen of India, Nepal, or Bhutan

Educational Qualification

The candidate must have a graduation degree in any stream from the Government of India recognised University or any equivalent qualification from a Central Government recognized institution. The candidate must possess a valid Mark-sheet / Degree Certificate stating that he/ she is a graduate on the day he/she registers for the IBPS PO exam.  The candidate has to also provide the percentage of marks obtained in graduation while registering online.

Age Criteria

Any Candidate who is applying for the IBPS CWE examination should not be less than 20 years old and not more than 30 years old at the time of registration. However, there is an age relaxation applicable to category-wise candidates.

The candidates appearing in the IBPS PO exam must be qualify under any one of the following:

  1. Citizen of India, or
  2. Citizen of Nepal, or
  3. Citizen of Bhutan, or
  4. Tibetan refugees who have come to India to seek a settlement before January 1, 1962, or
  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from either Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zaire, or Zambia with the intention of permanent settlement in India

Candidates belonging to categories 2, 3, 4 must have a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India in their favor.

How to Apply for IBPS PO Exam

Part-I: IBPS PO Registrations

As the first step, the candidates need to register themselves on the official website of the Commission. For this, the candidates must follow the steps mentioned below:


  • Visit the official website of IBPS - https://ibps.in/
  • Click on the ‘New User Register Now’ link
  • Fill the registration form
  • Click on the Submit button
  • Note down the system-generated registration ID

Part-II: IBPS PO application form

Next, candidates can log in to their registered accounts using their registration number and password and complete the remaining steps of the application process.

The candidates have to upload a scanned copy of the following documents, to complete their application process:

Part-III: Fee Structure

Candidates should make the payment of requisite fees/ intimation charges through  ONLINE mode only, that is by Debit/Credit Card, Net Banking, IMPS, Cash Card, and Mobile Wallets (like Paytm, GPay). Once the fees are paid, the candidate cannot claim for refund.. At the end of the payment procedure, the candidate should make sure to take a print copy for future use.

Q. Can I appear for IBPS PO with a 55% graduation score?

Ans. Yes, you can appear for IBPS PO with a 55% graduation score. There is no percentage cut-off, but the candidate must have completed the graduation.

Q.  What is the selection process for IBPS PO?

Ans. IBPS PO is held in three stages: Prelims, Mains and Interview. The candidate will have to clear each stage to qualify for an IBPS PO appointment.
Q.  When will the online applications start?

Ans. IBPS PO notification will be released in the first week of August.

Q. What is the cut-off for IBPS PO recruitment?

Ans. There is no fixed cut-off. It depends on the performance of the candidates each year.

Q.  Is IBPS PO a bilingual exam?

Ans. Yes, the IBPS PO exam is conducted in English and Hindi language. However, the English language section is in English only.

Q.  What is the application fee?

Ans.  The application fee  for SC/ ST/ PWD candidates is ₹ 175/-. All others have to pay ₹ 850/-
